Esther 1:10–15
The previous section focused on the external display of the King's wealth. Now, the narrative shifts inward to the King’s "merry" (drunken) heart and a marital conflict that spirals into a national crisis. We see how the lack of self-control in a leader can change the course of history.
1. Observation: What does it say?
Read Esther 1:10–15 carefully.
The Condition of the Heart: Note the state of the King’s heart in verse 10. What was the cause?
The Command: To whom did the King give orders? (List the names of the seven eunuchs if you are being thorough). What was his specific command regarding Queen Vashti?
The Goal: Why did the King want her brought in? (v. 11).
The Reaction: How did Queen Vashti respond to the King’s command? (v. 12).
The Consultation: Who does the King turn to for advice? (v. 13-14). What was their specific expertise?
2.Interpretation: What does it mean?
Verse 11: The King commanded Vashti to appear wearing the "royal crown" (v. 11). Many commentators suggest this implies only the crown, or at the very least, an invitation to be paraded as a trophy before drunken men. (Remember the edict on no restrictions of drinking from verse 8). How does this command reflect Ahasuerus's view of people as possessions?
The King’s Fury: Why was the King so "burned" with anger? Was it because he missed his wife, or because his public image of absolute control was shattered?
Verse 12 : Ahasuerus ruled 127 provinces, yet verse 12 shows he could not control his own wife or his own temper. What is the author revealing about the limits of earthly authority?
Verse 13: Notice that the King doesn't speak to Vashti directly; he consults "experts in law and justice" (v. 13). Why does he turn a personal conflict into a legal matter?
3. Application: What does this mean in my life?
Poor Decision Making: The King’s poor decision-making was fueled by wine and ego. In what areas of your life are you prone to making impulsive decisions when your "heart is merry" (or stressed, or angry)?
The Fear of Man: The King was terrified of looking weak in front of his guests. Do you ever compromise your values or treat others poorly just to maintain a certain "image" or to avoid embarrassment?
4. Prayer
Write out a prayer to reflect on this passage. Use the following as a prompt.
“Lord, help me to make decisions in my life with You in mind and not my own ego, or when I am in fear, stressed or angry. Help me to remember to take a breath and trust that you are in control of all things to help me make wise decisions and responses to those around me.”
